Knight In a Day

San Antonio, Texas, exemplified 153 new Knights of Columbus into the order on January 17, 2004 at Alamo Council 4298. 31 Councils from 16 Districts across the Archdioceses of San Antonio took part. The Knight in a Day exemplifications began with a Mass at St. Pius X that was co-celebrated by Monsignor Liam Brosnan and Monsignor George Stuebben, who is Council 4298’s Chaplain and to whom the Second & Third Degree Exemplifications were dedicated. Deacon Gene Townsend, Council 4298 Assistant Chaplain, delivered the Homily on the principles of the Order. Over 240 candidates and Brother Knights attended the Mass. 3 Assemblies joined together to form the honor guard during Mass.
Immediately following the Mass, 52 candidates received their 1st Degree. Bishop Thomas Flanagan’s San Antonio Insurance Degree Team presented the 1st Degree, which was dedicated to the memory of all of the dearly departed brothers from Council 4298. Nearly 200 Brother Knights observed and joined in by retaking the oath of the 1st degree. The 2nd and 3rd Degree Exemplifications followed and the San Antonio Archdioceses Degree team led by Conferring Officer Clarence Fey performed an excellent degree. Even with an extremely large class, all candidates were thoroughly exemplified and all participated with enthusiasm as the degree team went through the program.

SK Fey stated that this was the largest Major Degree class he could remember in all the years of being a Knight. Several of the other team members also remarked on the size of this class. SK Fey also stated that the entire day went extremely well and thanked the Degree Committee from Council 4298, led by Chairman Paul Macias, for excellent planning and making sure all of the candidates were registered and accounted for throughout the day. The Knight in a Day ended with a dinner, prepared by Council 4298’s “Head Chef”, Trey Brooks and his crew of culinary experts. Council 4298 raffled off a 21-speed mountain bike that was donated by Msgr. Stuebben, and the lucky winner was one of the newly exemplified Knights. Even though only one person could win the mountain bike, everyone who attended the exemplifications were winners, by becoming 3rd degree Knights of Columbus.
